“Inspired to Serve”
Peace to Progress was birthed from a passion to support women and families with the tools they need to flourish through every state of their journey. In the 1930s Dr. Grantly Dick-Read began describing the relationship fear had on the birthing process. His research culminated in a circle, where Fear leads to Tension, Tension leads to Pain, and Pain further fortifies a women's Fear in the midst of her labor.
Throughout her hands-on experience as a labor and delivery nurse, mother of four, and doula, Milly Weis built off of Dr. Dick-Read's foundation to further describe an alternative circle. She found that Peace is the psychological factor that leads to the release of Endorphins in the brain. Endorphins bath the tissues of the body, producing more elasticity in the muscles and tissues they influence. When muscles and tissues are saturated in Endorphins, this produced quicker and less painful Progress in birthing a child—leading to greater levels of Peace!
These polar circles can be further appreciated from the context of Milly's labor and delivery experience. Dr. Dick-Read's "Fear/Tension/Pain Circle" holds the same initials as those of a common abbreviation utilized in hospitals across the country: FTP (Failure To Progress). An obstetric chart is often marred with this abbreviation along the path toward a possible cesarean delivery and represents the provider's evaluation that the woman's cervix is simply not making the needed change fast enough. Our passion is to provide women with the Peace they need in order to Progress through their labor smoothly and quickly in order to avoid this abbreviation all together!
